The appointment is on the calendar, and your mind has already played out every possible result. Maybe it’s a routine checkup you’ve been dreading, a scan, a follow-up after strange symptoms, or the call to go over test results. Waiting rooms have a way of making the anxiety louder.

These prayers before a doctor appointment are short enough to pray in the parking lot or the waiting room. Each one comes with an NIV verse you can hold onto while you wait.

Short on time? A 1-minute prayer

Lord, I’m nervous about this appointment. You already know what the doctor will say, and nothing about it surprises You. Calm my body, slow my thoughts and help me listen clearly. Whatever I hear today, I won’t hear it alone. I trust You. Amen.

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”

Psalm 56:3 (NIV)

Prayers before a doctor appointment

1. A prayer the night before the appointment

God, my mind keeps running ahead to tomorrow. I’m imagining the worst and rehearsing conversations that haven’t happened yet. I give tomorrow to You tonight. Help me rest instead of research. Let me sleep, and meet me in the morning. Amen.

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Matthew 6:34 (NIV)

If the worry is keeping you awake, our night prayers and prayers for overthinking can help you lay it down before bed.

2. A prayer in the car or waiting room

Lord, my heart is racing and my hands won’t stay still. Be with me in this room. Steady my breathing. Help me notice You here: in the person at the front desk, in the next breath, in the fact that I’m not carrying this by myself. Amen.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)

3. A prayer for the doctor and nurses

Father, give my doctor wisdom today. Help them see clearly, listen carefully and explain things in a way I can understand. Bless the nurses and staff, who see so many anxious people every day. Guide every decision made for my care. Amen.

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

4. A prayer when you’re waiting on test results

God, waiting is the hardest part. Every time my phone buzzes, my stomach drops. Teach me to wait with You instead of waiting in fear. Whatever the results are, You will still be good, and You will still be with me. Give me peace that doesn’t depend on the outcome. Amen.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

5. A prayer for courage to ask questions

Lord, sometimes I freeze in the exam room and forget everything I wanted to ask. Give me courage to speak up, to ask what I don’t understand and to be honest about how I’m really feeling. Help me be a good advocate for my own health. Amen.

“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”

2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV)

6. A prayer if the news is hard

Father, I didn’t want to hear that. I’m scared and I don’t know what comes next. Hold me up right now. Give me one next step, not the whole road. Surround me with people who can help, and remind me that You are close to the brokenhearted. Amen.

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

If you’re facing a diagnosis or treatment, our prayers for healing are a good place to keep praying.

7. A prayer of thanks for good news

God, thank You. I’ve been carrying this fear for days, and I can finally breathe. Thank You for my body, for the people who cared for me and for Your faithfulness while I waited. Help me remember this the next time I’m afraid. Amen.

“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.”

Psalm 107:1 (NIV)

8. A prayer for ongoing health anxiety

Lord, this isn’t just about one appointment. I worry about my health all the time, and every new feeling sends me spiraling. Heal the fear underneath it all. Help me care for my body wisely without being ruled by it. Keep my mind steady on You. Amen.

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

Isaiah 26:3 (NIV)

Simple ways to calm down before an appointment

  • Write your questions down. Put them in your phone notes the night before so you don’t have to remember them under stress.
  • Breathe out longer than you breathe in. Inhale for four counts, exhale for six. Pray “You are with me” on the exhale.
  • Bring someone if you can. A second set of ears helps, and you don’t have to sit in the waiting room alone.
  • Limit late-night symptom searching. It usually feeds fear more than it helps. Bring your questions to your doctor instead.
  • Plan something kind for afterward. A walk, a coffee or a call with a friend gives your mind something to look forward to.

When health worry won’t let go

Some nerves before a doctor visit are normal. But if health fears are taking over your days, keeping you up at night or making you avoid care, that’s worth taking seriously. Talk to your doctor about the anxiety itself, and consider a counselor who understands health anxiety. Our prayers for anxiety can walk with you, and if you ever feel unsafe, call or text 988 in the US anytime.
