It’s late. The house is quiet, but your mind isn’t. You’ve tried scrolling, counting and rolling over one more time. If that’s where you are tonight, these Bible verses for sleep are for you.
Want words to pray instead of read? Try this prayer to sleep. Below are the Scriptures themselves.
They aren’t magic words, and they won’t replace good sleep habits or medical help if you need it. But they can give your mind something true to rest on when everything else feels loud. Read one slowly. Breathe. Let God have the night.
Why read Scripture before bed?
An anxious mind at night tends to rehearse: the conversation that went wrong, the bill that’s due, the what-ifs about tomorrow. Scripture interrupts that loop with something steadier. Instead of replaying the day, you’re reminded who is watching over the night.
Many people find that choosing one verse and repeating it slowly, almost like breathing, helps their body settle along with their thoughts.
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.”
Psalm 4:8 (NIV)
Bible verses for sleep when your mind won’t slow down
When you’re afraid to lie down
“When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.”
Proverbs 3:24 (NIV)
Fear often gets louder in the dark. This verse is a promise you can say out loud as you turn off the light.
When you can’t stop working in your head
“In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.”
Psalm 127:2 (NIV)
Your worth isn’t measured by how late you stay up solving problems. Rest is a gift, not a reward you have to earn.
When you’re exhausted and weighed down
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
When you wake up in the middle of the night
“On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.”
Psalm 63:6 (NIV)
If you’re awake at 3 a.m., you don’t have to fight it. Use the time to talk to God instead of worrying. Our night prayers can help.
When anxiety keeps you up
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)
“When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.”
Psalm 94:19 (NIV)
When you need to know God is still awake
“He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”
Psalm 121:3-4 (NIV)
You can sleep because He doesn’t. Nothing tonight will catch Him off guard.
When you need peace more than answers
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
Isaiah 26:3 (NIV)
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
John 14:27 (NIV)
When you’re afraid of what’s coming
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
Psalm 56:3 (NIV)
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”
Psalm 91:1 (NIV)
When you need to let go of the day
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Psalm 46:10a (NIV)
“I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the LORD sustains me.”
Psalm 3:5 (NIV)
A short prayer to pray with these verses
Lord, I’m tired, and my mind won’t slow down. I give You the conversations I keep replaying, the worries about tomorrow and everything I can’t fix tonight. You don’t sleep, so I can. Quiet my thoughts, relax my body and let me lie down in peace. I trust You with the night. Amen.
How to use these verses at bedtime
- Pick one, not ten. Choose a single verse and repeat it slowly as you breathe out.
- Put the phone across the room. Write your verse on a card or sticky note by your bed instead.
- Breathe it. Breathe in on the first half of the verse and out on the second half.
- Write down tomorrow’s worries first. Get them on paper so your mind doesn’t have to hold them.
- Be gentle with yourself. If sleep doesn’t come right away, resting quietly with God still counts.
