You check on them one more time before bed. You replay the conversation from the car. You picture every way things could go wrong at school, online, with friends, on the road. Loving your kids this much can turn into a worry that never switches off.
These prayers are for the moments when you can’t stop worrying about your kids. Pray them in the hallway outside their door, in the pickup line or at 2 a.m. Each one comes with an NIV verse to hand the weight back to God.
Short on time? A 1-minute prayer
Lord, I can’t stop worrying about my kids. You love them even more than I do, and You see them when I can’t. I place them in Your hands right now. Watch over them, guide them and give me peace tonight. Amen.
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)
Prayers when you can’t stop worrying about your kids
1. A prayer when worry keeps you awake
Father, it’s late and my mind won’t quiet down. I keep running through every “what if” about my children. I can’t protect them from everything, but You never sleep. Keep watch over them tonight so I can rest. Amen.
“The LORD will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”
Psalm 121:7-8 (NIV)
2. A prayer for their safety when they’re away
God, my child is out of my sight right now, at school, at a friend’s house or on the road. Go with them where I can’t. Protect them from harm, help them make wise choices and bring them home safely. Amen.
“But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.”
2 Thessalonians 3:3 (NIV)
If they’re traveling, our prayers for safe travel are a good companion to this one.
3. A prayer for a child who is struggling
Lord, my child is having a hard time, and I don’t know how to fix it. Whether it’s anxiety, friendships, grades or something they won’t tell me, You see it all. Comfort them, surround them with good people and show me how to help. Amen.
“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV)
4. A prayer for their choices and friendships
Father, I can’t make every decision for them anymore. Give them wisdom to choose good friends and courage to walk away from what’s harmful. Let what we’ve taught them take root, even on the days it seems like they aren’t listening. Amen.
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”
Proverbs 22:6 (NIV)
5. A prayer for their heart and faith
Jesus, You welcomed the children. Draw mine close to You. Let them know they are loved by You, not only by me. Plant faith in them that grows deeper than my worry ever could. Amen.
“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”
Mark 10:14 (NIV)
6. A prayer for peace for their future
God, I worry about who they’ll become, the path they’ll take and the world they’re growing up in. Teach them Your ways, and give them a peace that doesn’t depend on circumstances. Help me trust You with tomorrow. Amen.
“All your children will be taught by the LORD, and great will be their peace.”
Isaiah 54:13 (NIV)
7. A prayer to stop borrowing tomorrow’s trouble
Lord, I keep living in scenarios that haven’t happened. Bring me back to today. Help me enjoy my kids as they are right now, instead of worrying about who they might be in ten years. Today has enough, and You are enough for it. Amen.
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Matthew 6:34 (NIV)
8. A blessing to pray over your children
Lord, I speak Your blessing over my children tonight. Keep them, shine on them and give them Your peace. Amen.
“The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.”
Numbers 6:24-26 (NIV)

Practical ways to worry less about your kids
- Turn each worry into a one-line prayer. When a fear pops up, name it to God and say their name. It moves the worry from your head to His hands.
- Separate what you can control from what you can’t. Do the next wise thing (a conversation, a boundary, a check-in), then release the rest.
- Talk with them, not just about them. A calm question at dinner often does more than hours of silent worrying.
- Limit the news and worst-case stories. Scary headlines feed parental anxiety without making your kids any safer.
- Find another parent to pray with. Worry shrinks when it’s shared out loud with someone who gets it.
When parental worry becomes too much
Every parent worries. But if fear for your children is constant, keeps you from sleeping or makes it hard to let them do normal things, it may be anxiety that deserves care too. Talk to a counselor or your doctor, and keep praying through our prayers for anxiety and prayers for overthinking. If you or your child ever feel unsafe, call or text 988 in the US anytime.
