Family can be the place where you feel most loved and the place where you feel most hurt, sometimes on the same day. Whether your home is peaceful right now or full of tension, distance or worry, one of the most powerful things you can do for the people you love is pray for them.
Below you’ll find prayers for your family for every season: for protection, unity, provision, healing after conflict, family members who are far from God, and the generations to come. Each one comes with an NIV verse you can pray back to God. Pray them alone, with your spouse, or around the dinner table.

Why praying for your family matters
You can’t control the people you love. You can’t make a teenager open up, fix a parent’s health or force siblings to get along. Prayer is how you hand the people you can’t control to the God who can reach them.
Praying for your family also changes you. It softens your heart toward the people who frustrate you, helps you see them the way God does, and reminds you that your home belongs to Him. A family that is held together by God is stronger than one held together by willpower alone.
“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NIV)
Prayers for your family
1. A prayer for God’s blessing over your family
Father, thank You for my family. Thank You for every person You’ve placed in my life, the easy ones and the hard ones. I ask You to bless our home. Let Your presence fill every room. Make our home a place of kindness, laughter, safety and faith. Be the center of our family, and let everything else find its place around You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
“The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.”
Numbers 6:24-26 (NIV)
2. A prayer for family protection
Lord, I place my family in Your hands. Watch over each of us as we come and go: at school, at work, on the road and at home. Protect our bodies, our minds and our hearts. Guard us from harm and from the schemes of the enemy. When I’m tempted to worry about the people I love, remind me that You love them even more than I do. Amen.
“The LORD will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”
Psalm 121:7-8 (NIV)

3. A prayer for unity and peace at home
God, You know the tension in our home. You know the words that have been said and the silence that has followed. Bring peace where there is conflict. Help us listen before we speak, be slow to anger and quick to forgive. Tear down pride in each of us, starting with me. Bind us together with Your love. Amen.
“And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”
Colossians 3:14 (NIV)
4. A prayer for healing after family conflict
Lord, our family has been hurt. Some wounds are old and some are new. I can’t fix this on my own. Heal what is broken between us. Give me the courage to apologize where I was wrong and the grace to forgive where I was wronged. Where reconciliation is safe and wise, open the door. Where it isn’t yet, guard my heart from bitterness. Amen.
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
Ephesians 4:32 (NIV)
Forgiveness is rarely a one-time decision. Our prayers for forgiveness can help you keep bringing it to God.
5. A prayer for family members who are far from God
Father, I’m praying for the people in my family who don’t know You, or who have walked away from You. You see them clearly and You love them completely. Draw them to Yourself. Put the right people in their path. Soften their hearts. And help me love them well without pushing or preaching, so that my life points them to You. Amen.
“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
Luke 19:10 (NIV)
6. A prayer for your children
Jesus, thank You for my children. Help them know they are loved by You and by us. Give them wisdom, good friends and a faith that becomes their own. Protect them from things that would harm their hearts. Give me patience and wisdom as a parent, and forgive me when I get it wrong. Amen.
“All your children will be taught by the LORD, and great will be their peace.”
Isaiah 54:13 (NIV)

7. A prayer for provision
Lord, You know our needs: the bills, the groceries, the unexpected expenses. I trust You to provide for my family. Give us wisdom with what we have, gratitude for what You’ve already given, and generosity toward others. Keep money worries from stealing our peace. Amen.
“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:19 (NIV)
8. A prayer for a family member who is sick
God, someone I love is sick, and our whole family feels it. Bring healing to their body and peace to their mind. Give their doctors wisdom. Strengthen those of us who are caring for them, and help us lean on each other instead of falling apart. Amen.
“Heal me, LORD, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.”
Jeremiah 17:14 (NIV)

9. A prayer for the generations to come
Father, I pray not only for my family today but for the generations after us. Let faith be passed down in our family like an inheritance. Break any unhealthy patterns that have been handed down, and start new ones of love, honesty and faithfulness. Let our children’s children walk with You. Amen.
“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.”
3 John 1:4 (NIV)
How to pray together as a family
Family prayer doesn’t have to be long or formal. Small, regular moments matter more than big ones.
- Pray at one meal a day. Thank God for the food and ask each person for one thing to pray about.
- Bless your kids at bedtime. Speak Numbers 6:24-26 over them before lights out.
- Keep a family prayer list. Put it on the fridge and mark answered prayers. It becomes a record of God’s faithfulness.
- Pray in the car. A short prayer before school or a long trip sets the tone for the day.
- Let everyone pray their own way. Little kids might pray one sentence. That’s perfect.
- Pray for other families. Visit our prayer wall together and pray for someone else’s request.
If you’re married, praying with your spouse is one of the best ways to protect your home. Our prayers for marriage are a good place to start.
When family is painful
Not every family is safe. If someone in your home is hurting you, praying is good, but it isn’t the only step. Please reach out to a trusted pastor, counselor or local authorities, and in an emergency, call 911. God cares about your safety, and seeking help honors Him.
