When someone you love is sick, everything else goes quiet. Work, plans and errands fade into the background while your mind stays with them: in the hospital room, on the couch at home, in the waiting room between tests. Maybe it’s your mom, your dad, your spouse, your child or a sibling. If you’re searching for a prayer for a sick family member, you’re carrying a love that hurts right now.

You don’t need perfect words to pray. God hears the groan behind the words, too. Below are prayers for a sick family member for different situations, Scripture to hold onto, and a few practical ways to care for them and for yourself while you wait.

What the Bible says about praying for the sick

All through Scripture, people brought their sick loved ones to God. A centurion asked Jesus to heal his servant. A father begged Jesus to help his son. Friends lowered a paralyzed man through a roof so he could reach Jesus. James tells believers to call the elders of the church to pray over the sick (James 5:14-15). Praying for someone who is ill is one of the most natural, faithful things a Christian can do.

“Heal me, LORD, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.”

Jeremiah 17:14 (NIV)

We pray boldly for healing because God is able. We also pray with open hands, trusting Him with the outcome, because His ways are higher than ours. Both are faith. And whatever happens, God promises to be near.

“The LORD sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness.”

Psalm 41:3 (NIV)

Praying for healing goes hand in hand with good medical care. Doctors, nurses and treatments can be some of the ways God cares for the people we love.

Prayers for a sick family member

1. A prayer for a sick family member’s healing

Lord, You know how much I love [name]. You love them even more. I’m asking You to heal their body. Touch every cell, every organ and every place that is hurting. Give wisdom to their doctors and nurses, and let every treatment do its work. Restore their strength and bring them back to full health. I trust You with this. In Jesus’ name, amen.

2. A prayer for comfort in pain

Father, [name] is hurting, and I can’t take the pain away. Please ease it. Give them rest when sleep is hard and peace when fear rises. Let them feel Your presence in the long hours. Wrap them in Your comfort like a warm blanket. Amen.

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

3. A prayer before tests or waiting on results

God, the waiting is so hard. We don’t know what the results will say, and our minds keep jumping ahead. Hold [name] and our whole family in Your peace. Whatever the news is, You are already there. Give us courage to hear it and wisdom to know what to do next. Amen.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

4. A prayer for a family member in the hospital

Jesus, [name] is in a hospital bed tonight. Surround them with Your presence in that room. Bless every nurse, doctor and staff member who comes through the door. Protect them from complications and give them rest. Bring them home in Your time, stronger than before. Amen.

“The LORD will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”

Psalm 121:7-8 (NIV)

5. A prayer for an aging parent who is sick

Lord, I’m watching my [mom/dad] grow weaker and it breaks my heart. Thank You for every year You’ve given us together. Give them dignity, comfort and peace in this season. Help me honor them well, be patient when it’s hard and say the things that need saying. Hold us both. Amen.

6. A prayer for a sick child

Father, my child is sick and I feel helpless. You are a perfect Parent, and You see them even when I have to step out of the room. Heal their little body. Calm their fears. Give me strength to stay steady for them and the rest I need to keep going. Amen.

7. A prayer for the caregiver (that’s you)

God, I’m tired. I’m trying to be strong for everyone, and I’m running low. Give me strength for today, not all of next month. Help me ask for help and accept it. Let me rest without guilt. Remind me that You are carrying all of us, including me. Amen.

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.”

Isaiah 40:29 (NIV)

8. A prayer when you don’t know what to pray

Holy Spirit, I don’t have words anymore. You know what [name] needs better than I do. Pray through me. Amen.

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we should pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”

Romans 8:26 (NIV)

Bible verses to pray over a sick loved one

Sometimes the most powerful prayer is simply speaking God’s Word over someone. Here are a few to pray by name, or to write on a card for their bedside:

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

Psalm 46:1 (NIV)

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.”

Isaiah 43:2 (NIV)

“The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.”

Numbers 6:24-26 (NIV)

Practical ways to care for a sick family member (and yourself)

  • Pray with them, not just for them. Ask if you can pray out loud. Keep it short. Hold their hand if they want that.
  • Ask others to pray. Share a short update with your church, small group or trusted friends. You can also post a request on our prayer wall and let others carry it with you.
  • Say yes to practical help. Meals, rides, babysitting and laundry are love too. Let people love you.
  • Keep showing up. Your presence matters more than having the right thing to say.
  • Take care of your own body. Eat, sleep and step outside when you can. You can’t pour from an empty cup.
  • Be honest with God about how you feel. The Psalms are full of fear, frustration and grief. You can bring all of it to Him.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NIV)

Watching someone you love suffer can bring on anxiety, sleepless nights and even depression. If that’s happening to you, our prayers for strength may help, and please consider talking to a counselor. Frequently asked questions

How do I pray for a sick family member?

Be honest and specific. Thank God for your loved one, ask Him to heal and comfort them, pray for wisdom for their doctors and peace for your family, and surrender the outcome to Him. Praying Scripture like Jeremiah 17:14 or Psalm 41:3 over them by name is a simple place to start.

What Bible verse can I send to someone who is sick?

Isaiah 41:10, Psalm 46:1 and Numbers 6:24-26 are gentle, encouraging verses to text or write in a card. They remind your loved one that God is with them, strengthening and holding them in this season.

Does God always heal when we pray?

God is able to heal, and Scripture invites us to ask boldly. But He doesn’t always answer in the way or timing we hope, and we don’t always understand why. What He does promise is His presence, comfort and faithfulness through every outcome, and a future where there will be no more pain.
