Grief doesn’t follow a schedule. One minute you’re managing, and the next a song, a smell or an empty chair knocks the wind out of you. If you’ve lost someone you love, you don’t need tidy answers right now. You need somewhere to put the pain. These prayers for grief are for that. Pray them slowly, pray them through tears, or just read them when you can’t find words of your own.

Below you’ll find a prayer for grief in the first days, prayers for the hard anniversaries and holidays, a prayer you can pray for someone else who is grieving, and Bible verses for comfort to hold onto.

God is not afraid of your grief

Some people feel guilty for grieving, as if sadness means they don’t trust God enough. Scripture says otherwise. When Jesus stood at the tomb of His friend Lazarus, knowing He was about to raise him, He still cried.

“Jesus wept.”

John 11:35 (NIV)

Two words, and they change everything. Your tears don’t push God away. He weeps with you. He also makes a promise to people in exactly the place you are now.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

Matthew 5:4 (NIV)

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

Prayers for grief in the first days

A prayer when you’ve just lost someone

Lord, I can’t believe they’re gone. Everything feels unreal and heavy. I don’t know how to do the next hour, let alone the next week. Please hold me up. Be close to me in the shock and the numbness. Help me breathe. I’m leaning on You because I have nothing left. Amen.

A prayer for grief when you can’t stop crying

Father, the tears keep coming. I miss them so much it hurts in my body. Thank You that You see every tear and You don’t turn away. Hold me in this. Let me feel Your nearness even when I can’t feel anything else. Amen.

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

Psalm 147:3 (NIV)

A prayer for grief at night

God, nights are the hardest. The house is quiet and my mind replays everything. Sit with me here. Quiet the questions I can’t answer tonight. Give my body rest, even if it’s only a little. Watch over me until morning. Amen.

If sleep has become a battle, these prayers for sleep were written for long nights.

A prayer when you feel angry or confused

Lord, I’m angry, and I don’t understand why this happened. I’m bringing that to You honestly, because You can handle it. I don’t need every answer today. I need You. Don’t let go of me while I wrestle. Amen.

The Psalms are full of people asking God “why” and “how long.” Honest lament is still prayer.

A prayer for grief on anniversaries and holidays

Birthdays, the anniversary of their passing, the first Christmas or Thanksgiving without them. These days can bring grief rushing back, even years later. It helps to know they’re coming and pray ahead.

A prayer for the anniversary of a death

Father, today marks another year without them. Part of me dreads it and part of me wants to remember every detail. Thank You for the life we shared. Hold the ache and the gratitude together in me today. Comfort everyone who is missing them. Amen.

A prayer for the holidays after a loss

God, everyone else seems happy and I feel the empty seat at the table. Give me grace to show up where I can and permission to step away when I need to. Help our family be gentle with each other. Remind me that You are Emmanuel, God with us, even here. Amen.

“Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.”

Psalm 30:5 (NIV)

A prayer for someone who is grieving

When someone you love is hurting, it’s hard to know what to say. Often the best thing is to show up, listen and pray. You can pray this over them, or send it to them.

A prayer for a grieving friend

Lord, I lift up ____ to You. Their heart is broken and I can’t fix it. Please be close to them. Wrap them in Your comfort. Send people who will bring meals, sit in silence and remember with them. Give them rest at night and strength in the mornings. Let them know they are not alone. Amen.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NIV)

You can also post their name (first name only is fine) on our prayer wall so others can pray too.

A prayer for a grieving family

Father, this family is carrying a loss too big to hold. Hold them together. Give them patience with each other’s different ways of grieving. Provide for every practical need, and let Your peace fill their home. Amen.

  • “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21:4
  • “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:26
  • “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

You might also read John 14:1-3 and 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14, where Scripture speaks about the hope Christians hold for those who have died in Christ.

Grief is not something to rush

There’s no deadline for grief. Some days will feel lighter and others will knock you flat again. That isn’t going backward. It’s love that still has nowhere to go.

  • Let people help. Say yes to the meal, the ride, the walk.
  • Keep a simple routine. Eat something, step outside, get some rest when you can.
  • Remember out loud. Tell stories. Say their name.
  • Find support. A pastor, a grief group or a counselor can walk with you. Reaching out is not a lack of faith.

Grief often brings anxiety and exhaustion along with it. These prayers for strength and prayers for peace can carry you on the heavy days.

If grief has settled into a darkness that won’t lift for weeks, please talk to your doctor or a counselor. If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 (US) or contact local emergency services.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good prayer for someone grieving?

A simple prayer asking God to be close, to comfort them and to send people who will care for them is enough. Try: “Lord, be near to ____ in their grief. Comfort them, give them rest and let them know they are not alone.”

What does the Bible say about grief?

The Bible treats grief as real and holy. Jesus wept at His friend’s tomb (John 11:35), and He promised that those who mourn will be comforted (Matthew 5:4). Psalm 34:18 says God is close to the brokenhearted.

Is it wrong to be angry at God when someone dies?

Many faithful people in Scripture brought anger and confusion to God, especially in the Psalms. Bringing those feelings to Him honestly is a form of prayer. He can handle your questions, and He stays with you in them.
