Fear has a way of sounding very convincing. It tells you the worst will happen, that you’re on your own and that you won’t be able to handle it. The Bible answers those lies directly. “Do not be afraid” shows up again and again in Scripture, and it’s almost always followed by a reason: because God is with you. These Bible verses about fear are grouped by the situations where fear tends to hit hardest, so you can find the right truth for the moment you’re in.

Below you’ll find about 20 verses, a short prayer and a simple way to fight fear with Scripture.

What the Bible says about fear

The Bible talks about two kinds of fear. One is “the fear of the Lord,” a deep reverence and awe of God that Proverbs calls the beginning of wisdom. The other is the anxious, paralyzing kind of fear we all know. Scripture invites us to trade the second for the first. When God is big in your eyes, everything else shrinks.

Fear itself isn’t a sin. It’s a human response to danger, real or imagined. But God doesn’t want you to live there. He keeps meeting frightened people with the same words: do not fear, I am with you.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)

Bible verses about fear when you feel alone

A lot of fear comes down to one question: will anyone be with me? God’s answer is yes.

“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV)

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Psalm 23:4 (NIV)

“But now, this is what the LORD says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: ‘Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.’”

Isaiah 43:1 (NIV)

“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

How to fight fear with Scripture

Reading a verse once is good. Letting it reshape how you think takes a little practice. Here’s a simple approach:

  1. Name the fear. Write it in one honest sentence. “I’m afraid the test results will be bad.” Fear is harder to fight when it’s vague.
  2. Find the matching truth. Pick one verse from this page that speaks to that exact fear. Alone? Deuteronomy 31:8. The future? Matthew 6:34.
  3. Say it out loud. Read the verse slowly, two or three times. Hearing truth in your own voice helps it land.
  4. Turn it into a prayer. “Lord, You said You’ll never leave me. I’m holding You to that today.”
  5. Carry it with you. Write it on a card, set it as your lock screen or text it to a friend. Return to it every time the fear returns.

Fear rarely leaves after one round. That’s okay. Each time you answer it with truth, you’re building trust.

A short prayer when you’re afraid

Lord, I’m afraid. I’m not going to pretend I’m not. But You keep telling me not to fear, because You are with me. So I’m choosing to trust You right now. Hold me with Your right hand. Drive out my fear with Your perfect love. Give me courage for the next step. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Frequently asked questions

How many times does the Bible say “do not be afraid”?

Variations of “do not fear” or “do not be afraid” appear many dozens of times across the Old and New Testaments, depending on the translation and how you count. The point isn’t the number. It’s how often God chose to say it.

What is the best Bible verse for fear?

Isaiah 41:10 is one of the most loved because it gives both a command and a reason: do not fear, for I am with you. Psalm 56:3 and 2 Timothy 1:7 are also short and easy to memorize.

Is fear a sin according to the Bible?

Feeling afraid is not a sin. It’s a normal human emotion, and even David wrote, “When I am afraid.” The Bible invites you to bring fear to God and trust Him with it, rather than let fear lead your decisions.
