It usually hits when the room gets quiet. Your chest tightens, your thoughts start sprinting, and suddenly you’re replaying a conversation from three days ago or bracing for something that hasn’t even happened. If that’s you right now, take a breath. You’re not weak, and you’re not alone.
God doesn’t ask you to pretend you’re fine. He invites you to bring the anxiety to Him. Below are seven short prayers for anxiety you can pray right now, the Bible verses behind them, and a few simple practices that help your mind settle.

What the Bible says about anxiety
Scripture is honest about worry. David wrote psalms from caves. Jesus sweated drops like blood in Gethsemane. Paul admitted he was “under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure.” Anxiety isn’t a new problem, and it isn’t proof that your faith is broken.
What the Bible gives us isn’t a command to “just stop worrying.” It’s an invitation to trade:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
Notice the order. You bring your requests. God brings His peace. And that peace “guards” your heart and mind like a soldier at a gate. You don’t have to manufacture calm. You receive it.
7 prayers for anxiety
1. A prayer when anxiety hits suddenly
Lord, my heart is racing and I don’t fully know why. I’m stopping right now to breathe and remember that You are here. You are not surprised by this moment. Steady my breathing. Slow my thoughts. Remind me that I am safe in Your hands. In Jesus’ name, amen.
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
Psalm 56:3 (NIV)
2. A prayer for a racing mind
Father, my mind won’t stop. Every thought pulls me toward the worst case. I take these thoughts captive and hand them to You one by one. Replace my what-ifs with Your truth. Fix my mind on what is true, good and lovely. Amen.
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
Isaiah 26:3 (NIV)
3. A prayer for anxiety about the future
God, I keep trying to live in tomorrow. I’m worried about money, about people I love, about decisions I haven’t made yet. You already stand in tomorrow. Give me what I need for today, and help me trust You with the rest. Amen.
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Matthew 6:34 (NIV)
4. A prayer for anxiety at night
Lord, it’s late and my thoughts are loud. I lay down every worry I’ve been carrying today: the conversations, the mistakes, the unfinished things. You never sleep, so I can. Quiet my heart and let me rest in You tonight. Amen.
If nighttime is the hardest for you, our bedtime prayers for sleep are written for exactly those hours.
5. A prayer for social anxiety
Jesus, I’m nervous about being around people today. I’m afraid of saying the wrong thing or being judged. Remind me that my worth was settled at the cross, not in anyone’s opinion. Give me courage, kindness and calm. Let me notice others instead of fearing them. Amen.
“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”
2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV)
6. A prayer for health anxiety
Father, every symptom makes my mind jump to the worst. I give You my body and my fears about it. Give wisdom to the doctors I see, and give me peace while I wait for answers. You are my healer and my refuge. Amen.
7. A prayer to hand it all over
God, I’m tired of carrying this. I’ve tried to control it, fix it and figure it out, and it’s too heavy. So here it is. All of it. I cast it on You, because You care for me. Thank You that I don’t have to hold this alone. Amen.
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)
How to pray when you’re too anxious to pray
Some days the words won’t come. That’s okay. Romans 8 says the Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes for us when we don’t know what to pray. Here are a few simple ways to pray when your mind is too loud:
- Breathe a short prayer. Inhale: “Lord, You are here.” Exhale: “I give this to You.” Repeat slowly for one minute.
- Pray one verse. Read Psalm 56:3 out loud and make it your sentence for the moment.
- Name it. Tell God exactly what you’re afraid of in one sentence. Fear shrinks when it’s named in His presence.
- Write it down. List the worries on paper, then pray over the list and physically set it aside.
- Thank Him for one thing. Philippians 4 ties peace to thanksgiving. Gratitude shifts where your mind is looking.

When anxiety needs more than prayer alone
Prayer is powerful, and so is getting help. Talking to a pastor, a Christian counselor or your doctor is not a lack of faith. God often works through people. If anxiety is affecting your sleep, work or relationships for weeks at a time, please reach out to someone you trust.

Frequently asked questions
Is it a sin to have anxiety?
No. Feeling anxious is part of being human in a broken world. Jesus Himself was “deeply distressed and troubled” in Gethsemane. The Bible invites you to bring anxiety to God, not to feel ashamed of it.
What is the best Bible verse for anxiety?
Philippians 4:6-7 is the most loved because it gives you something to do (pray with thanksgiving) and a promise (God’s peace will guard your heart and mind). 1 Peter 5:7 is a close second for its simplicity.
How long should I pray when I’m anxious?
There’s no required length. A ten-second honest prayer is better than a long one you don’t mean. Start small: one minute of slow breathing and one sentence handed to God.
Can prayer really help anxiety?
Prayer turns your attention from the problem to the One who holds it. Many people find that praying, slowing their breathing and meditating on Scripture brings real calm. It works best alongside wise care, rest and community.
