I’m going to break away from my story to explain what I think of Christianity. I have been asked this a lot recently and I think I need to talk about this more. Most of my thoughts stem from Blue Like Jazz, you can see the book through the books tab on my website.
Christianity to me, used to mean that you believe in God. For 20 years I believed this. It was either you were Christian or you weren’t. However, the people who claimed they were “Christian” never really showed it. They acted like all the “non-Christians”. When I chose to associate myself with these “non-Christians” I was always judged by “Christians”. However, I felt more accepted than I did when I was around “Christians”.
In Blue Like Jazz, Donald Miller talks about defending Christianity. He explains he would never defend the term. Why would he refuse to defend Christianity? He says it would be physically impossible to defend the term.
If you went up to 10 different people and asked them all the same question; “What does Christianity mean to you?” Well, you would get 10 different answers.
How could you defend a term that means 10 different things to 10 different people? The term could bring back memories of the time they were abused from a Christian teacher, a time where they felt unaccepted as they entered a new church, the time their parents forced them to believe. The list is literally endless. So, why would we ever want to associate ourselves with Christianity.
Well, that’s the purpose of this website. Evolving from Christianity means we are moving to a relationship with Jesus. A real relationship. This isn’t a relationship where you judge others, make others feel unaccepted, or hated. This is a relationship that is SO beautiful that you are wanting to talk about it every second of the day. It’s a relationship where you live to His TRUE word. It’s a relationship where you help, care, and love others as yourself. You also respect other people’s beliefs. You listen to what they believe and you share what you believe, but you don’t stop loving them.
Do you think Jesus stopped loving you when you had doubt?
To end this, I want to clarify a few things. I believe Jesus is real. I believe Jesus loves you even if you don’t believe in Him. I believe that we should live in community. I believe his word is one of the best ways to Jesus’s heart. I just don’t consider myself a Christian.
I consider myself as a 23 year old who has a beautiful relationship with Jesus.
I love others and care for them. I do this because I want to, and I feel like I was called to do it. I love hearing about other people’s beliefs. I respect them, I share my beliefs, and love them with no judgment.
If you want to talk about this, feel free to leave a comment! I want to know what you think! Have a blessed day everyone!
